Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns announced the New South Wales gun buyback scheme will commence on November 2, 2026.
The state government will offer compensation of up to A$1,000 for each returned rifle or handgun to enforce a new four-firearm ownership limit.
The crackdown is a direct response to the December 14, 2025 Bondi Beach Hanukkah shooting in Sydney, which left 15 people dead.
