Vismay Soni, Managing Director of SMR Jewels Limited, discusses how the brand blends traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies such as CAD-driven design and advanced manufacturing processes to reinterpret heritage jewellery for a contemporary market while maintaining trust across the jewellery ecosystem.
Tell us about the journey of SMR Jewels. What inspired the founding of the company and how has the brand evolved over the years?
"Our jewellery should carry heritage, meaning, and legacy.” This belief forms the foundation on which SMR Jewels was built. Guided by this philosophy along with strong family values, industry trust, and a deep respect for antique jewellery craftsmanship the brand has steadily established a respected presence in the market over the years.
All our pieces reflect our philosophy of creating pieces that showcase India’s rich cultural heritage. Over time, SMR Jewels has evolved from a trusted B2B business into a design-focused jewellery house known for heritage-inspired creations, bespoke bridal pieces, and sculptural motifs that feel culturally rooted yet relevant for today’s consumer. Our ability to strike a delicate balance between traditional and contemporary design has been a key reason for our longevity.
Jewellery manufacturing in India is deeply rooted in craftsmanship and tradition. What values shape the way SMR Jewels approaches design and production?
At SMR Jewels, jewellery is viewed as a narrative rather than merely an ornament. Every design is intentional and influenced by heritage craftsmanship, cultural symbolism, and the belief that a jewel should outlive the moment in which it is worn. This approach requires significant time spent on research, revisiting antique forms and exploring how traditional ideas can be translated into pieces that remain emotionally and aesthetically relevant.
On the production side, our values are equally clear. We believe in respecting the hand of the artisan, maintaining high standards of detailing, and creating pieces that stand for both beauty and permanence. Even when we use technology for refinement, the soul of the jewellery remains handmade.
What have been some of the key milestones that helped SMR Jewels establish its position within the jewellery manufacturing ecosystem?
One of the key milestones for SMR Jewels has been our approach to creating jewellery that carries not just design value, but also a story, purpose, and meaning behind it. From the beginning, we focused on explaining why a piece was created and what inspired it, which gradually helped people understand and appreciate our work more deeply.
Another important turning point was connecting with like-minded professionals within the jewellery industry who supported and encouraged our growth. Over time, our designs have also received manufacturing and design recognitions, and it has been especially rewarding to see our retail partners win awards for pieces they sourced from us.
A true sign of our impact has been when our design motifs and concepts began inspiring others in the industry, reflecting the creative influence SMR Jewels has developed within the jewellery manufacturing ecosystem.
As a leader in this space, what lessons have you learned while building long-term relationships with retailers and partners?
The one thing that matters more than anything in the jewellery business is trust. It can literally make or break your business, and it is only built through consistency. Retailers and partners value reliability. They need to know that the quality will be consistent, the delivery will be timely, and the response will be honest. In a category like jewellery, trust compounds over time, and once it is earned properly, it becomes one of the strongest growth drivers for any business.
Another important learning is that listening matters just as much as designing. Retailers understand that every customer is different, and when we as manufacturers pay attention to their feedback, we can create pieces that customers appreciate and are also rooted in our design philosophy. In the end, strong relationships are built on honesty, responsiveness, and consistently delivering quality.
How would you describe the design philosophy of SMR Jewels?
At SMR Jewels, jewellery is never viewed as an isolated object. The brand explores storytelling through form, texture, symbolism, and craftsmanship. Many of our designs are motif-driven, sculptural, and layered with emotional depth. We are especially drawn to aesthetics that carry cultural depth, whether through antique influences, divine narratives, or symbolic interpretations that can become future heirlooms.
In terms of craftsmanship, we aim to be known for handcrafted fine jewellery with strong detailing, dimensional beauty, and a distinct antique character. Jadtar, Meenakari, Polki-jewellery, and bespoke bridal creations are important to our language. At the same time, we want our jewellery to feel alive in the present, not frozen in nostalgia.
The jewellery industry is highly competitive and constantly evolving. What has helped SMR Jewels remain relevant?
It has to be our constant focus on design innovation and strong business ethics. At SMR, we believe that creating meaningful and well-researched designs keeps us aligned with changing market preferences. Parallelly, we approach every business interaction bearing in mind our core values of trust and transparency, which also helps us in maintaining long-term relationships with our retail partners. Rather than just supplying products, we focus on helping our clients grow their business by offering commercially viable designs, consistent quality, and reliable support. This balance of creativity and ethical business practices has been key to our continued growth.
How do you balance preserving traditional techniques while embracing innovation?
For us, innovation works best when it supports craftsmanship rather than replacing it. The heart of SMR Jewels is still handmade artistry. Our artisans bring patience, instinct, and detail that no machine can replicate. That human skill is what gives our jewellery warmth, nuance, and authenticity. Preserving that is non-negotiable for us.
At the same time, we are practical about the role of technology. Tools such as CAD and AutoCAD help us refine structure, proportions, and technical precision before the piece moves into handcrafting. This makes the process more efficient and gives both retailers and clients greater clarity during development. On the design front, our effort is always to reinterpret tradition rather than simply repeat it. We retain the essence of heritage motifs, but shape them in a way that feels lighter, more refined, and more relevant for the contemporary buyer.
What role does Gujarat’s jewellery and trading culture play in shaping SMR Jewels?
Gujarat has played a very important role in shaping both our mindset and our discipline as a company. Ahmedabad’s trading culture teaches you to value relationships, credibility, and commercial clarity. It makes you responsive to the market, but it also teaches you that longevity comes from trust. For a jewellery business, that environment is extremely formative because it sharpens both business instinct and customer understanding.
At the same time, Gujarat gives you a strong connection to entrepreneurial thinking. There is a natural respect here for craft, enterprise, and value creation. This is enabled us to adopt a business approach that is design-led yet commercially grounded. We respect our roots and take pride in them. And I strongly believe that Gujarat’s culture has helped us build a truly enduring, culturally sound brand.
Looking ahead, what is your long-term vision for SMR Jewels?
The long-term vision is to establish SMR Jewels as a brand that reflects the depth and cultural heritage of Indian jewellery.
While many global brands have successfully connected jewellery with storytelling, we believe India has an even richer cultural narrative to offer. Positioning SMR Jewels as a heritage-driven Indian brand that creates pieces with meaning, purpose, and lasting value is the ultimate goal. We want every design to carry a story entrenched in tradition, craftsmanship, and cultural inspiration. By focusing on antique aesthetics, thoughtful design, and authentic artisan craftsmanship, we aspire to create jewellery that not only serves our clients but also represents the artistic legacy of India.
If you had to describe SMR Jewels in three defining qualities, what would they be?
Quite a thought-provoking question, but if I had to quickly summarise our principles, these would be it:
First, craftsmanship with intention. Every piece must justify itself through detail, finish, and permanence.
Second, creativity without boundaries. We believe design should not be limited to convention. That is why motifs, stories, and cultural references are so central to our identity.
Third, trust built over time. Whether it is with retailers, partners, or customers, long-term credibility matters deeply to us. Jewellery is a business of relationships, and trust is what gives every creation its real foundation.
If these three qualities remain strong, then growth follows naturally.
