Suhani Mehta: Connecting Craftsmanship, Entrepreneurship And Market Access Through CraftConnect

Suhani Mehta is developing CraftConnect, an initiative created in collaboration with Hamari Pahchan NGO to explore how traditional craftsmanship can be strengthened through entrepreneurship, digital visibility and improved access to markets. Her work brings together research, community collaboration and systems thinking, with a focus on the practical challenges artisans face beyond the creation of handmade products. 

CraftConnect emerged from a simple observation: possessing a craft is only one part of building a sustainable livelihood. Artisans may have strong technical skills and distinctive products, yet reaching customers can require knowledge of pricing, branding, presentation, communication, digital platforms and market channels. Suhani’s work examines these interconnected challenges and explores ways to help artisans participate more effectively in contemporary markets. 

Her vision for CraftConnect extends beyond creating another marketplace. She envisions an ecosystem that equips artisans with the knowledge and tools needed to become more confident entrepreneurs. This includes entrepreneurship and employability training, financial-literacy and pricing workshops, branding and storytelling, Instagram and WhatsApp use, digital-marketing skills, product catalogues, market research and stronger connections to potential customers and markets. The aim is to support artisans not only in making products, but also in understanding the economic systems around those products. 

A central part of Suhani’s approach is understanding the artisan journey as a connected system. Product development, pricing, presentation, visibility, customer communication, distribution and market access are not isolated steps. Each can influence the ability of an artisan-made product to reach consumers and generate sustainable economic value. Through CraftConnect, Suhani is studying these relationships while developing practical resources that can support artisans in navigating different stages of market participation. 

The initiative also reflects Suhani’s interest in research and evidence-based community work. Her work includes examining artisan income and pricing, understanding market needs, mapping aspects of supply chains and studying how digital presence can affect product visibility. Rather than treating entrepreneurship as separate from craftsmanship, CraftConnect considers the two together, recognizing that sustainable livelihoods can depend on both the quality of a product and the systems that enable it to reach the right audience. 

The project has also begun building a measurable impact framework. CraftConnect has helped mobilize ₹5 lakh toward its broader work and has established goals of training more than 1,000 artisans and strengthening the digital presence of more than 100 artisan businesses. Planned outputs include workshop curricula, branding toolkits, digital-marketing resources, product catalogues and artisan business profiles. These figures represent the initiative’s impact targets and planned scale rather than completed outcomes, as the project continues to develop. 

Collaboration with Hamari Pahchan is an important part of this effort. Working with an NGO provides Suhani with an opportunity to understand community needs more closely and connect research with practical implementation. Her involvement includes research, collaboration and development of project resources, while the partnership helps explore how organizations can work together around artisan livelihoods, entrepreneurship and market access. 

For Suhani, CraftConnect is also an exploration of the relationship between traditional knowledge and contemporary economic systems. Handmade products carry individual creativity, cultural knowledge and specialized skills, but their sustainability can depend on how effectively those products are presented, communicated and connected to consumers. By studying this ecosystem, she is interested in finding ways for traditional craftsmanship to remain economically relevant without losing the human and creative processes at its core. 

The initiative reflects Suhani’s broader interests in entrepreneurship, research and community-focused problem solving. It allows her to move between qualitative understanding and practical strategy: listening to artisan experiences, studying market barriers, developing resources and thinking about how interventions can create longer-term value. This systems-based perspective is central to her work, as she considers artisans, products, consumers, organizations, marketing channels and markets as interconnected parts of one ecosystem. 

Her approach emphasizes practical capacity building: translating research into tools, engaging with communities and refining resources around the needs of artisans, while ensuring that solutions remain practical, measurable and responsive to realities. 

CraftConnect therefore represents more than a project focused on handcrafted products. It is Suhani’s attempt to explore how entrepreneurship, digital tools, financial knowledge and market access can complement traditional craftsmanship. Her long-term vision is to contribute to an ecosystem in which artisans are not viewed only as producers, but also as entrepreneurs with greater agency over how their products are priced, presented, promoted and brought to market. 

As CraftConnect continues to evolve, Suhani’s focus remains on building practical, measurable and community-responsive solutions. By combining research with collaboration and entrepreneurial thinking, she hopes to help create pathways through which artisans can gain stronger visibility, develop sustainable business capabilities and engage more confidently with contemporary markets. The project is an ongoing effort, but its direction is clear: preserving the value of traditional craftsmanship while creating new opportunities for artisans to participate, compete and grow in a changing economy.
