From India To LA, Devam Shah Is Emerging As A Rising Star In Music Photography

For Los Angeles-based photographer Devam Shah, building a career in entertainment and music photography has been about much more than standing in a photo pit with a camera. His journey has been shaped by persistence, genuine connections and a constant effort to develop his own creative style.

Originally from India, Shah moved to the United States at around 18 to formally study photography. After settling in Burbank, he immersed himself in Southern California's creative environment, developing both his technical skills and his visual perspective.

One of the turning points in his early journey came when he decided to simply get out with his camera and look for opportunities. While walking from Hollywood Boulevard toward Sunset Boulevard, he came across a live event, approached security and asked if he could shoot. He was eventually given a media pass, an experience that introduced him to new people within the entertainment industry and reinforced the importance of taking initiative.

Before moving to America, Shah studied under veteran photographer Dinesh Mehta, who introduced him to fundamental photographic techniques as well as the work and philosophy of masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson. That foundation helped shape Shah's belief that photography is not just about creating visually striking images, but also about capturing genuine moments and emotion.

His portfolio gradually expanded across music, fashion, portraiture and entertainment. A major milestone came when he was credentialed for ComplexCon, where he photographed artists including Lil Uzi Vert and Kodak Black. For Shah, photographing artists whose music he had grown up listening to in India was a particularly meaningful experience.

Another personal highlight came through his work with Grammy nominated artist and producer Maejor along with Pandora. After crossing paths at events and eventually working together on a photoshoot, Shah was given the opportunity to have one of his photographs featured as part of a campaign connected to Maejor's album Earth Moods: Frequencies (Vol. 1). Seeing his work displayed on the digital screens in Times Square became one of his biggest achievements so far.

“Honestly, it was a dream come true. The last time I was at Times Square, I was looking at those giant screens and just manifested my work being on them one day. Seeing it actually happen was an incredible feeling.”

Shah now hopes to continue working with leading international musicians and expand his work across music, editorial photography and creative direction. He also hopes to collaborate with Arijit Singh, whose music has been a personal influence throughout his journey.

Over the next few years, Shah aims to tour with major artists, work with leading publications and eventually move further into filmmaking and creative direction.

For now, his focus remains simple: keep learning, keep shooting and continue building a visual language of his own.
