How a simple sleep problem led to the creation of a new-age magnesium wellness category in India.

In a wellness market increasingly crowded with supplements, Eight Roots is taking a different approach—one that began not with a business plan, but with a personal problem. Rooted in science and grown with care, the brand traces its origins to a common yet often overlooked issue: poor sleep.

Founded by husband-wife duo Rishabh Bohara and Niharika Jain, the founders believe that better health starts with a better night’s rest. Struggling with late nights and inconsistent rest, Rishabh began exploring the underlying causes, eventually identifying magnesium deficiency as a key factor. While solutions existed, they were largely limited to pills and tablets—formats he was keen to avoid.

This led him to look beyond the Indian market.

Globally, magnesium was gaining traction in topical formats such as lotions, with emerging research indicating improved absorption compared to oral supplements. Drawing on his academic background from IIT Bombay and his analytical experience as a former management consultant, Rishabh began studying scientific literature and experimenting with formulations to develop a magnesium-based body lotion. Because the team believes that you deserve to sleep better and live brighter, what started as a personal solution soon evolved into a broader opportunity.

A conversation with his sister, who was searching for a safe and effective sleep solution for her toddler, became a turning point. It led to the creation of Eight Roots’ Kids Bedtime Lotion—now the brand’s flagship product and a key driver of its early growth.

Launched just seven months ago after five months of focused research and development, Eight Roots has already reached over 5,000 customers across India and Singapore. The brand operates through its own website and Amazon, leveraging a direct-to-consumer model to build early traction in a relatively untapped category.

At the core of Eight Roots’ positioning is its emphasis on quality and scientific credibility. The brand sources its magnesium from the Zechstein seabed in the Netherlands, a globally recognized source known for its purity. This focus on high-grade ingredients sets it apart in a market where quality consistency often remains a challenge, ensuring that wellness is delivered, one drop at a time.

Complementing the product vision is a strong founding team. While Rishabh brings analytical rigor and product development focus, Niharika Jain—an LLB graduate and former corporate lawyer at Khaitan & Co—adds strategic and operational depth to the venture. Together, they are building Eight Roots with a clear emphasis on trust, transparency, and long-term brand value.

Looking ahead, the company aims to establish itself as India’s first science-led magnesium wellness brand, with a particular focus on children and mothers. By combining global research, premium sourcing, and a modern distribution approach, Eight Roots is not just introducing a product, but unlocking the power of magnesium for a healthier you and shaping a new category within everyday wellness.
