Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital, Madurai, has become the first healthcare institution in India to be awarded the prestigious LEED Platinum Certification by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), marking a historic milestone in the country’s healthcare and sustainability sectors.

Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital, Madurai, became India’s first to earn USGBC’s LEED Platinum for healthcare, scoring 83 points for excellence in energy, water, waste, and sustainable design.
The recognition, under the LEED v4 Healthcare rating system, places the hospital among an elite global group of environmentally responsible medical institutions. Achieving 83 points, the hospital has demonstrated outstanding performance in areas such as energy and water efficiency, sustainable materials, waste management, and indoor environmental quality — key pillars of green building design and operations.
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is a globally recognised symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership. Buildings are evaluated across several parameters and can earn one of four certification levels: Certified (40–49 points), Silver (50–59), Gold (60–79), and Platinum (80+ points) — the highest level of distinction.
“By achieving LEED Platinum, Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital has set a new benchmark, not only for healthcare infrastructure in India but for sustainable development across all sectors,” said Ma Subramanian, Tamil Nadu Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
He further added, “This achievement places Madurai alongside cities in the USA, Spain, Turkey, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia where hospitals have met these rigorous standards.”
Dr. S Gurushankar, Chairman of Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre, said, “In today’s world of rising energy needs and environmental concerns, green buildings in healthcare are not just desirable, they are essential,” he said.
He emphasized that such sustainable designs not only reduce the hospital's environmental footprint but also enhance patient recovery by improving air quality, natural lighting, and thermal comfort. “This certification symbolises a forward-looking healthcare model — one that is efficient, people-friendly, and future-ready,” he noted.
