In a move that would be extremely beneficial for card users, the government on Thursday moved to waive service tax credit and debit card transactions of up to Rs 2000 in a single transaction. At present, there is a 15 per cent service tax on the use of credit and debit cards at merchant establishments. This is in continuation of the government’s and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s objective of making India a cashless economy and promote digital payments. This will bring down bills for customers using credit and debit cards significantly.
