At the age of 29, Siddhartha renounced his royal life in search of truth and liberation from suffering. He wandered for several years, practising severe austerities and meditation. Eventually, he realised that extreme self-denial was not the path to enlightenment. He adopted the Middle Way, a balanced approach between indulgence and self-mortification.

At the age of 35, while meditating under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Siddhartha attained enlightenment and became the Buddha, meaning "The Awakened One." He understood the nature of suffering and the path to its cessation, which he later taught as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.

For the next 45 years, Buddha travelled across northern India, teaching the principles of compassion, mindfulness, detachment, and ethical conduct. He gathered a large following, including monks, nuns, and lay disciples. He passed away at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, achieving Mahaparinirvana, the final liberation.
