Rajesh Kumar has opened up about the financial and personal struggles he faced after leaving acting to pursue farming in his hometown of Gaya, Bihar. Inspired by spiritual leader Sadhguru, the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai actor stepped away from the entertainment industry in 2017 and eventually accumulated ₹2 crore in debt.
Rajesh told Bollywood Bubble that his decision was influenced by Sadhguru’s Rally for Rivers campaign and his message about encouraging young people to understand agriculture. Speaking to The Mystic World, he recalled how the spiritual leader’s words prompted him to reconsider his own role in farming.
The actor eventually began horticulture, but the venture brought a series of setbacks. A major flood destroyed his plantation after he had invested in it, while the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted another attempt involving around 15,000 trees.
He later faced a water crisis after the water table disappeared. Rajesh said he could only afford to drill a borewell to 500 feet, but no water was found.
Despite losing money repeatedly, Rajesh said he does not view his farming experience as a failure. His understanding of the process, he explained, gave him lessons he would not otherwise have learnt.
He also credited spirituality with helping him deal with the difficult period without anxiety, depression or anger. “I was seeing it not happening. But my effort and process didn’t stop. That is what spirituality is,” he said.
In an earlier conversation with Meri Saheli, Rajesh revealed that the farming venture had left him with ₹2 crore in debt as his expenses continued without a steady income.
The actor also said later said that his financial situation had improved considerably. By April, he said only around 10–15% of the original debt remained, putting the outstanding amount at approximately ₹20 lakh.
Known for playing Rosesh in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Rajesh has since returned to acting and was recently seen in Saiyaara, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and Nishaanchi.
