Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger is slated to have its world premiere at the Royal Film Performance in London’s Leicester Square on September 22. It's entirely skipping the fall film fest circuit. The much-anticipated premiere of is touted be the 73rd Royal Film Performance™ delivered by the Film and TV Charity in its 100-year history.
Tom Cruise stars in the film as the most powerful man in the world, setting out a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything. The cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.
Warner Bros’ Joker: Folie a Deux directed by Todd Phillips debuted in Venice two years ago and never recovered from poor reviews. The company is betting big on Digger with a reported budget of $130M. It lost a staggering sum of money on Supergirl and The Bride, two of the year's biggest box office and critical disasters. Warner Bros will release Digger in the UK and US on October 2. The film marks Iñárritu’s return to English-language filmmaking after 2015’s Oscar winner The Revenant.
The Digger team affirmed: “We consider it an honor and a privilege to hold the global premiere of DIGGER in service of the Film and TV Charity, which does such wonderful work for our many colleagues in the entertainment industry. DIGGER was filmed, and post-production completed, in the UK, so it is especially meaningful to return there to debut the film with audiences for the first time in the country of its making. What we were able to accomplish with this film was made possible by the level of local excellence both in front of and behind the camera, and we can’t wait to share everyone’s talents with the world.”
Marcus Ryder MBE, CEO of The Film and TV Charity, said, "For more than 80 years, the Royal Film Performance has brought together audiences and industry leaders in support of a vital cause. It celebrates the exceptional creativity and talent behind our world-leading industry while raising essential funds to support the Film and TV Charity and the incredible talented people working behind the scenes. We are delighted that Digger will continue this proud tradition and help us further our mission to support the UK’s film, television, and cinema workforce.”
Digger is poised to be a major award season player.
