Greta Gerwig's Narnia Touted As One Of Netflix's Most Expensive Films Ever With $280M Budget

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig's upcoming movie, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, is believed to be one of Netflix's most lavishly mounted movies ever with a whopping production budget of $280M. Gerwig's much-awaited follow-up to her billion-dollar blockbuster, Barbie, is also Netflix's first title to receive a sprawling 49-day theatrical exclusivty.

The most expensive movie Netflix has ever produced is The Electric State, which cost a staggering $320M, reshoots included. It crashed with severely negative reviews. This was followed by The Irishman at $225M, and Red Notice and The Gray Man, both of which cost $200M.

Greta Gerwig's Narnia Budget Details

Two-time Oscar nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey delivered a masterclass at the Armenian Cinematographers Guild workshop on July 15, 2026, during the Golden Apricot International Film Festival in Yerevan, Armenia. This was where he shared few revealing insights from the Narnia production. McGarvey serves as the fiilm's DP. He called the production “the biggest budget hand-knitted project,” and commented that the filmmaker had “a dream of poetry in our souls” while working on the film. He also revealed that he had recently watched a rough cut of the film with Gerwig in London. The screening took place on July 10, and he described getting completely absorbed in what he was watching.

Journalist Matt Belloni first raised the possibility of the high production budget on his podcast, The Town, saying, “I’ve heard it’s going to be the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made,” Belloni said on the show, adding that it would rank among the streamer’s priciest productions regardless of the exact final tally.

Narnia Cast, Release Date

Narnia is aiming for a PG rating and stars young performers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, while Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, Ciarán Hinds, and Carey Mulligan round out the ensemble. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt composed the score. Sony Pictures Entertainment is handling the international distribution.

Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew recently resumed production, with additional photography picking up at Shepperton Studios. The film is scheduled to open in theatres globally on February 12, 2027, just over six months from now.
