The first trailer for Christopher Nolan's star-studded The Odyssey just debuted, featuring Matt Damon in the titular role of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca. Shot entirely using brand new IMAX film technology, the action epic promises to be the next cinematic spectacle from the Academy Award-winning auteur.
Nolan's film is an adaptation of ancient Greek poet Homer's epic, The Odyssey, which was first composed around the 8th or 7th century BC. The epic saga revolves around the strenuous 10-year-long journey of the Greek king Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the epic Trojan War to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
The nearly two-minute trailer of The Odyssey is filled with dramatic visuals and with only two important dialogues. It opens with Damon's Odysseus' voice saying in the background, “After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home. Not even me,” as he leads his soldiers home after the war.
In the trailer we also get a sneak-peek into Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland's characters. Hathaway plays Odysseus' wife Penelope while Holland is portraying his son Telemachus in the magnum opus. Towards the end of the trailer, we see an intense scene between Penelope and Odysseus with the former saying, “Promise me you will come back,” to which, the latter responds, “What if I can’t?”
As per the poem, on his way home, Odysseus faces Polyphemus the Cyclops, Sirens, the nymph Calypso and the witch goddess Circe in the oceans.
Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron round out the cast of The Odyssey. It is produced by Nolan alongside his wife Emma Thomas, under their banner Syncopy. Thomas Hayslip has served as the executive producer.
Filmed across multiple locations around the world, The Odyssey debuts in theatres worldwide on July 17, 2026, in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
