UK YouTuber and rapper Yung Filly is set to face a retrial on three counts of rape, after being acquitted three weeks ago of raping a young woman after a nightclub performance in Perth. He denied all 10 charges, and last month a jury deemed him not guilty on three counts of rape. He went through an eight-day trial for the same alleged attack last month in the District Court of Perth.
However, the jury could not reach verdicts on three further charges of sexual penetration, and it is those charges the prosecution is aiming to proceed to a retrial. Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, the real name of the rapper, had been on tour in Australia when he was accused of sexually assaulting the woman in his hotel room after he performed in Hillarys, a coastal suburb of Perth. This happened in 2024.
The woman - who was 20 at the time - was a fan of the star and went back to his hotel room after he played at a nightclub. She said they had initially had consensual sex but that it became non-consensual and violent. In court on Friday, prosecutor Danielle Clarke stated the complainant was "more than willing to give evidence" in a retrial. The rapper has repeatedly underlined that the sexual acts were consenusal. His defence lawyer stated emphatically that the complainant's accounts were exaggerations and lies. He has also been charged with possessing cannabis on 20 May this year.
Barrientos will next appear in court on 27 August for an application to vary his bail. A retrial date has not been fixed. The rapper is best known for his work with the YouTube collective Beta Squad.
