Summary
  • Olivia Rodrigo is dropping an unreleased song, Serena Joy, on August 24.

  • Prior to the digital drop, she made available a limited bunch of the CD's copies at the Analog Record Shop.

  • The song is an outtake from her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

Olivia Rodrigo's previously unreleased song Serena Joy had a limited physical release on August 21, with the track slated for a digital debut on streaming platforms three days later.

Only 500 copies of the CD single were rendered available exclusively at Analog Record Shop in Orange County, California. Proceeds from the release will go towards Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming Daisy Chain Fields charity festival.

Fans connected the title to Serena Joy Waterford, the controversial character from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 classic, The Handmaid’s Tale.

On Friday morning, Analog Music Shop posted about the song and its exclusive availability. “When we heard that Olivia Rodrigo was bringing an all-women music festival to Orange County, we were honestly just excited to see something this special happening right here in our hometown” (using “hometown” loosely, but close enough, since Tustin is adjacent to Irvine, where Daisy Chain Fields is taking place). “As one of the closest record stores in the area, we wanted to find a way to support Daisy Chain Fields.”

Olivia Rodrigo's Serena Joy CD Release

The message continued, “We knew Olivia had a track record of supporting record stores, but we were still taken aback when we heard the news: Olivia is releasing a new song ahead of Daisy Chain Fields called ‘Serena Joy,’ and she wants the physical CD copies to be exclusively sold at Analog Record Shop. And the best part… She’s giving it to us 3 DAYS before anyone else can hear it. Three days early. More than anything, we’re grateful for what this represents: An artist building a stage for women in music and raising funds for women and girls. An artist willing to support a local independent record store. And a hometown getting to be part of something really special. That means a lot to us.” Unsurprisingly, the store later reported that the entire collection has been sold.

In The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood wrote about Serena Joy,“She doesn’t make speeches anymore. She has become speechless. She stays in her home, but it doesn’t seem to agree with her. How furious she must be, now that she’s been taken at her word.

Olivia Rodrigo To Perform At Daisy Chain Fields Fest

In a June interview with eTalk, Rodrigo insisted that she “really” loved the track but ultimately removed it from her latest abum, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, because it did not fit the album’s chronological storyline. Rodrigo is performing at the Daisy Chain Fields charity festival on August 29. She founded the festival. Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, Garbage, the Breeders and KATSEYE will also perform at the first edition of the festival. The artists are performing for free, with all proceeds to be funnelled towards women's rights.
