Bengali Filmmaker Anik Dutta Passes Away After Allegedly Falling From Terrace

Renowned Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta, best known for acclaimed films like Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012) and Aparajito (2022), has passed away. Reports claimed that the director allegedly fell from the terrace of a multi-storey building in South Kolkata and was admitted to a nearby private hospital in critical condition.

Anik Dutta died on Wednesday (May 27). He was 66. He allegedly fell from the rooftop of his former wife’s house in South Kolkata’s Hindustan Park area, said police, where he was declared dead, reported the Indian Express.

An investigation was launched soon after his death. Saikat Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner, East Division, Kolkata Police, said, “An unnatural death case has been filed and an investigation has been initiated. Our expert team collected some samples. We have sent the body for postmortem. We have got an alleged suicide note but the contents of the note are under probe. We will be recording statements for the investigation,” he said. 

The body was taken to SSKM Hospital for postmortem.

Dutta had injuries on his head, shoulders, and chest, sources in the private hospital informed.

Anik Dutta's sudden death has left the Bengali film fraternity in grief and shock. Actors Abir Chatterjee and Jeetu Kamal, producer Firdausul Hassan, and directors Arindam Sil and Srijit Mukherji arrived at the hospital.

West Bengal's newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and other political leaders of the state mourned Dutta’s death. Several celebs from the industry have also condoled his death.

Who was Anik Dutta?

Dutta, the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta, the founder of United Bank of India, began his career in advertising and remained in the industry for two decades before he started directing films.

He rose to fame with Bhooter Bhabishyat, which was praised for its political and social satire. Ashchorjyo Prodip, Meghnad Badh Rahasya, Bhobishyoter Bhoot, Barunbabur Bandhu, and Jot Kando Kolkatatei are some of his notable works.
