First launched in 2003, MapleStory has evolved from a side-scrolling online role-playing game into one of South Korea's most recognisable entertainment franchises. Known for its expansive fantasy world, memorable characters and loyal global player base, the franchise has steadily expanded through music collaborations, live events and digital content over the past two decades.
Now, Nexon is taking MapleStory into cinemas with MapleStory DEAR MY HERO, the franchise's first theatrical animated film. Running for 32 minutes, the project has opened at Lotte Cinema locations across South Korea and offers fans a fresh perspective on the Maple World universe. By bringing one of its most beloved stories to the big screen, Nexon is continuing its efforts to broaden the franchise beyond gaming and connect with both long-time players and new audiences.
The story follows Aidan, a young recruit of the Cygnus Knights who joins the order after being inspired by the legendary Adversary. As he faces increasingly difficult battles, Aidan is forced to confront his own limitations and discover what being a hero truly means. The film carries a 12+ age rating and runs for 32 minutes. Tickets are priced at ₩5,000 and can be booked through Lotte Cinema's website and mobile app.
The release is particularly significant as it represents MapleStory's first theatrical animated project in the franchise's more than two-decade history. Industry observers see the film as part of Nexon's broader strategy to strengthen the MapleStory intellectual property through animation, live events and merchandise.
To celebrate the launch, Nexon has introduced a range of fan experiences, including limited-edition art cards, themed merchandise and in-game rewards such as Cygnus Knights outfits and exclusive medals. A large-scale exhibition featuring Grandis Transcendents and the Eight Apostles is also being held at Lotte Cinema World Tower until July 12.
Ahead of the film's release, Nexon unveiled the original soundtrack, We Are The Light, featuring singer Kangnam. The music video, which showcases key moments from the animation, was released through official MapleStory channels.
