About Chandra Barot

Barot, who was Manoj Kumar's longtime assistant director, came close to Amitabh and Zeenat, during the shooting of Roti Kapda Aur Makaan's filming. Don was Chandra Barot's directorial debut. For the unversed, when actor-producer Nariman Irani faced financial problem after the failure of Zindagi Zindagi (1972), Barot and his team helped Irani with the project, and brought in writers Salim-Javed to pen the action thriller.

Apart from Don, Barot also directed a few Bengali films like Aashrita (1989) and Pyar Bhara Dil (1991). Boss and Neil Ko Pakadna... Impossible, are some of his projects which either remained incomplete or unreleased.

Farhan Akhtar reimagined Don, and in 2006, Shah Rukh Khan starred in the new version of the cult classic, and the franchise continued, with its sequel in 2011. The third instalment stars Ranveer Singh.

Farhan Akhtar also took to his Instagram handle to pay tribute to Chandra Barot. He shared a picture of the director along with a heartfelt note that read: "Saddened to learn that the director of the OG Don is no more. RIP Chandra Barot-ji. Deepest condolences to the family (sic)".
