Dr. H Basavanagowdappa: Thriving Where Knowledge Meets The Unknown

The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the gravest tests faced by humanity in modern times—an event that brought nations to a standstill and pushed healthcare systems to their limits. Yet, in this period of global uncertainty, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (JSS AHER), Mysuru, emerged as a symbol of resilience, innovation, and service. Under the visionary leadership of Dr H Basavanagowdappa and the guidance of Chancellor His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, the institution turned fear into preparedness and confusion into coordinated action.

When the first wave struck India unexpectedly in March 2020, the world was still searching for answers. Dr Basavanagowdappa, then Dean of JSS Medical College and now Vice-Chancellor of JSS AHER, led from the front. “Certainty has boundaries, but innovation begins beyond the edge. With the unwavering support of Swamiji, we mobilised teams, transformed infrastructure, and built systems capable of facing an evolving and unpredictable threat.” He emphasises.

JSS AHER became one of the earliest institutions to create a fully functional flu clinic, COVID screening unit, and dedicated isolation and ICU facilities, ensuring uninterrupted medical services when many hospitals had shut their doors. The institution established Karnataka’s first private COVID testing laboratory, dramatically reducing the time needed for diagnosis at a moment when delays cost lives. Within weeks, oxygen beds were expanded, storage capacity was increased, and rapid-response protocols were developed through daily critical-thinking meetings—where asking the ‘right questions’ became the most powerful tool.

Healthcare workers, residents, security staff, and support teams all received rigorous training, protective equipment, and mental health support. Psychiatry and psychology departments provided round-the-clock counselling both online and offline, helping staff cope with unprecedented trauma and burnout. This culture of compassion and preparedness was rooted in Swamiji’s vision: that service to humanity is the highest form of spirituality.

JSS AHER treated over 15,000 patients, tested nearly 100,000 samples, and maintained lower-than-global mortality rates. The institution’s research arm rose to national prominence, contributing over 200 COVID-related publications, conducting 24 clinical trials, and becoming one of only six centers in India to receive the prestigious Mission COVID Suraksha Grant. The creation of frugal innovations, like a portable ICU chair costing just ₹2,000, demonstrated the institution’s commitment to accessible healthcare even in the remotest areas.

As the waves of the pandemic passed, JSS AHER emerged not only stronger but wiser. The experience reaffirmed core truths: that destiny may shape our path, but we steer the journey; that progress comes not from having all the answers but from daring to ask the right questions; and that visionary leadership grounded in compassion can carry communities through their darkest hours.
