The Supreme Court of India has cancelled the degrees of 634 doctors admitted during the period 2008 to 2012 in Madhya Pradesh saying that the admissions obtained through a mass fraud called "Vyapam scam" could not be condoned.

In an 83-page jugement, a bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar, Justices Kurian Joseph and Arun Mishra said,"The actions of the appellants are founded on unacceptable behaviour and in complete breach of rule of law. Their actions constitute acts of deceit... National character, in our considered view, cannot be sacrificed for benefits - individual or societal,"reports The Times of India.

The admissions to MBBS courses were made through unfair means between 2008 and 2012. They were cancelled by the MP Professional Examination Board.

It was found to be illegal on May 12, 2016 by a bench of Justices J Chelameswar and AM Sapre.

Subsequently, an order for cancellation of the degrees was issued by Justice Sapre while Justice Chelameswar had said since the students had completed their courses, it would be a national waste to annul the degrees.

Instead, Justice Chelameswar asked them to do a social service for a certain period. Following a split verdict, the matter was placed before the 3 member bench of CJI Khehar, Kurian Joseph and Arun Mishra.

There were massive irregularities in recruitment in various government departments, especially in the pre-medical examination conducted by MP Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), commonly known by its Hindi acronym "Vyapam".

The scam took larger proportions after a number of people connected with it, including witnesses and accused, died under suspicious circumstances.
