In what could come as a good news for WhatsApp users in India, it may launch a peer-to-peer payment system in India and is likely to be powered by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

According to a report by The Ken,  the messaging app owned bv Facebook will launch person-to-person payments on its platform within the next six months. It has planned to use UPI.

Quoting  unnamed sources, the report added that WhatsApp did consider mobile wallets, but the draft RBI guidelines of March 20 had led to some uncertainty.

While speaking to TechCrunch, WhatsApp told in a statement," India is an important country for WhatsApp, and we’re understanding how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India. We’re exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users."

Currently, WhatsApp has 1.2 billion users all over the world.

While an official announcement is yet to come, earlier in February, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Action, during his India visit, had said that the company was “in the early stages” of looking into how it can incorporate payment services, reported The Times of India.
