Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is reprising celebrated writer Saadat Hasan Manto in a biopic, recites Bol, an iconic poem by Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
Bol ke lab azaad hain tere by Faiz, the revolutionary Urdu writer, was a revolt anthem. Born in 1911 in present-day Pakistan, Faiz was a member of the Progressive Writers’ Movement, a left-leaning writers’ collective fighting imperialism.
In 1990, the Pakistan Government posthumously honoured him with the nation’s highest civil award, the Nishan-e-Imtiaz. His work is still influential in the subcontinent.
