Several Congress leaders and party MP Shashi Tharoor had been arrested by the Kerala Police following a protest over demonetization and later released. 

A report in The Indian Expresscites news agency ANI as source, saying that Tharoor and other leaders were arrested outside the RBI office in Thiruvananthapuram following their protest against demonetization. The Congress has reportedly been staging protests against the manner in which the note ban was carried out.

Tharoor, the MP from the constituency has been critical of the way in which the move was implemented, saying it was done in an ‘astonishingly incompetent manner.’

“We were sitting on a peaceful dharna outside RBI office but we were arrested by Police and were later released," Tharoor was quoted as saying.

Earlier, speaking at an event, Tharoor had lambasted the manner in which the note-ban was carried out, saying that “even the lack of planning in something as basic as making the new notes the same size as the old so that they can fit in the ATMs is mind-boggling”. The Congress MP added that the lack of preparation had made the government look “amateurish
