Hundreds of painstakingly chiselled man-made caves, some 450 of them, snake below the streets of Nottingham’s city centre. Some of these hold Europe’s most northerly cave art, e.g. on the limestone walls of Creswell Crags. Nottinghamshire’s cave credentials run incredibly deep into the soft sandstone, dating back to the medieval era and earlier. The new Nottingham Cave Trail ( features a three-mile walk designed to give a special insight into what lies beneath, from decaying dungeons to breweries, cock-fighting pits and even houses. To know more about the caves, you can download the Nottingham caves app or pick up a copy of the Cave Trail that covers the top 10 caves.
