Q: We are a couple looking to have a driving holiday in July. Should we do Iceland or Greenland? Magnificent landscapes and some light hiking are our things. We have 7-8 days to spare. If Greenland, can you recommend a local agent? Iceland seems to have many.

Marco Says:

Greenland is an exciting destination but there’s a bit of a hitch with your idea of having a driving holiday there—there are no roads! Hard to picture, but then, this is a land like no other. Sparsely inhabited, mainly in its southern reaches, travel between towns (settlements, really) is by plane, helicopter or boat. Even getting to the country involves flying in via either Iceland (from Reykjavik to the capital Nuuk or to Kulusuk in East Greenland) or Denmark (Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq).

So, if you’re set on a driving holiday to either of these countries,

Iceland it will have to be. Travel around Iceland is safe and easy; and the official tourism website has detailed information on how to set about planning a driving holiday as well as terrain issues to be kept in mind while driving. You won’t need an agent to organise this for you. Simply choose a car rental company (can be done online) and chalk out your own itinerary.
