Every nation is built twice. The first time, it is imagined. The second time, it is engineered.
Every nation is built twice. The first time, it is imagined. The second time, it is engineered.
For Laxman Vallakati, Founder, CTO and Chief Architect of Autocracy Machinery, this belief is the purpose behind a lifetime of invention, enterprise and indigenous engineering. Widely recognised as the “Trench Man of India,” he represents a new generation of Indian technologists who are not waiting for the world to build for India. They are building in India, for India, and increasingly for the world.
His entrepreneurial journey began at the age of 15, when he discovered that every challenge carries within it an opportunity to create. From retail and food processing to import-export and industrial projects, his early years gave him a rare understanding of markets, machines and execution. A defining milestone came when he contributed to the development of modern slaughterhouse facilities for the Government of Tamil Nadu, a project demanding precision engineering, regulatory knowledge and operational discipline.
Travelling across more than 40 countries sharpened his life’s mission. In advanced manufacturing ecosystems, he saw how specialised machines were transforming roads, utilities, agriculture, defence, mining, water systems and industrial productivity. He also saw the gap India had to close. Why should a country with extraordinary engineering talent depend on imported machinery designed for different terrains and project realities?
That question became the foundation of Autocracy Machinery.
Mr.Laxman envisioned Autocracy not merely as a machinery manufacturer, but as an engineering and technology enterprise built around India’s toughest infrastructure challenges. As Founder, CTO and Chief Architect, he personally leads research, product architecture, design, development and field validation. His philosophy is simple: the best machines are born from the soil, rock, water and field conditions they must conquer.
This belief made trenching technology central to his legacy. Every underground utility that powers modern life begins with a trench: optical fibre cables for digital connectivity, pipelines for drinking water, irrigation networks for agriculture, power cables for energy, and strategic defence infrastructure for national security. Yet for years, India depended heavily on conventional methods or expensive imported solutions. Mr.Laxman and his team changed that narrative by developing indigenous trenching machines that improved speed, accuracy, safety and productivity in Indian conditions.
Over time, industry respect gave him a title earned through impact: the Trench Man of India.
Today, that title stands for much more than trenching. It stands for a larger national mission: proving that India can design and build mission-critical machinery at par with German and global standards while remaining rooted in Indian realities. Under his leadership, Autocracy Machinery is advancing solutions across infrastructure, Optical Fibre Cable deployment, renewable energy, power transmission, water management, agriculture, construction, landscaping, mining, defence and environmental restoration.
His next frontier is even more ambitious. Mr. Laxman is driving the development of AI-enabled and remote-controlled trenching equipment that can make infrastructure execution safer, smarter and more precise. By integrating automation, intelligent controls and operator-assist technologies, he aims to reduce human risk in difficult terrains and improve efficiency across highways, energy corridors, defence zones and utility networks.
He is also introducing advanced subsea trenching machines by an Indian engineering enterprise, opening possibilities for underwater cable laying, offshore energy, marine utilities and strategic subsea applications. In sectors where India has traditionally looked outward for specialised equipment, he is working to create an indigenous alternative.
His vision also extends deep into resource and environmental engineering. Autocracy Machinery is building gold mining equipment technologies and rugged mining solutions intended to improve productivity, safety and reliability in demanding conditions. In marine and inland water management, the company is developing dredging machinery and Aquatic Weed Harvesters to restore lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs and ports. These machines remove silt and invasive vegetation, improve water flow, increase storage capacity and support long-term water conservation.
For national defence, Mr.Laxman’s work carries strategic importance. Autocracy Machinery became the first entrepreneur-led company to successfully supply trenchers to the Indian Army, proving India’s capability to build mission-critical equipment domestically. Today, the company continues to develop advanced Anti-Tank Trenching Machines designed to strengthen defence preparedness and strategic mobility.
With 25+ specialised products, 10+ granted industrial designs and 8+ patents, Autocracy Machinery reflects India’s growing engineering confidence. Its innovations support major national priorities such as BharatNet, Jal Jeevan Mission, water conservation, renewable energy corridors, agriculture modernisation and critical infrastructure development.
Yet Mr.Laxman believes his greatest contribution is not only machinery. It is mindset. A mindset that India can build its own solutions. That Make in India must mean world-class in India. That Atmanirbhar Bharat is not merely economic independence, but technological confidence. That Indian machines can rule the toughest environments with strength, durability and control.
Every nation is built twice. The first time, it is imagined. The second time, it is engineered. Through home-grown technology, bold innovation and relentless nation-building, the Trench Man of India is engineering that second journey for a stronger, smarter and self-reliant India.
