Washington Open: Leylah Fernandez Dismantles Anna Kalinskaya To Clinch Crown

Leylah Fernandez won the Washington Open

Leylah Fernandez collected the biggest title of her career after beating Anna Kalinskaya in the Washington Open final on Sunday.

Fernandez, who has now won four Tour-level titles, saved her most dominant display of the tournament until last as she surged to a 6-1 6-2 triumph in just over an hour.

The 2021 US Open runner-up arrived in Washington having failed to put together back-to-back victories since last November, but produced a stunning streak in the American capital.

On her way to the showpiece match, she downed top seed Jessica Pegula as well as Elena Rybakina, and Kalinskaya proved no match for Fernandez in a one-sided affair.

Fernandez took the first set in just 29 minutes, reeling off the final five games as she claimed the early advantage at the third time of asking.

The Canadian built on that momentum in the second as she continued to get the better of Kalinskaya's serve, breaking her opponent in the third and fifth games.

Fernandez sealed the win at her third attempt after her serve was returned into the net by Kalinskaya, who fell to her third consecutive Tour-level final defeat.

Data Debrief: Fernandez flies the flag

After a surprise defeat to Laura Siegemund in the second round at Wimbledon, Fernandez provided the perfect response in her first tournament since the grass-court slam.

Indeed, she became the first Canadian player to claim a WTA title on American soil since Bianca Andreescu at the US Open back in 2019.

She is also the Canadian player with the most titles since the introduction of the Tiers format in 1990, surpassing Andreescu.

And up next for the 22-year-old is a return to her homeland at the Montreal Open, where she takes on Maya Joint in the first round.
