A hold to love - and from nowhere, an opening set that long looked destined for a tie-break goes the way of Linda Noskova.
A hold to love - and from nowhere, an opening set that long looked destined for a tie-break goes the way of Linda Noskova.
The 21-year-old clinches it in style with a diving backhand at the net after a fine rally.
Noskova 6-3 Mertens
The first ace of this quarter-final from Linda Noskova helps ensure a far more serene hold than Mertens in the previous game.
She seals with a lovely clipped backhand around the net post and into the corner of the court when racing in.
Noskova 3-2 Mertens
Linda Noskova is only 21 years old but she has built solid foundations.
She is particularly great from the back of the court on the forehand and backhand wings. Her serve is accurate, it might not be the fastest out there on tour but she certainly hits it close to the lines. She is able to build points very well on her service games.
Both of these players look to dictate.
Noskova 2-1 Mertens
Elise Mertens, a bit of a return specialist, won the toss and opted to let her opponent serve.
Maybe part of that thought process was to expose any nerves in her 21-year-old opponent.
There are certainly a couple - as evidenced by a double fault and a couple of backhands into the net. Break point - but Mertens goes long with a backhand. Deuce in a lengthy opening game.
This is the first career meeting between the 21-year-old Czech player (Nosková) and the 30-year-old Belgian player (Mertens).

Linda Nosková has been one of the standout performers of the grass-court season. The Czech lifted the Berlin Open title before Wimbledon and has continued that form in London, including an impressive straight-sets win over Madison Keys to reach the quarterfinals. Armed with a powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes, Nosková is bidding for her second Grand Slam semifinal and enters the contest with plenty of confidence.
Across the net will be experienced Belgian Elise Mertens, who has enjoyed one of her finest Wimbledon campaigns by reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in her career. Fresh off her upset victory over Elena Rybakina, Mertens has once again demonstrated why she remains one of the most consistent performers on tour. The pair have never faced each other before, making this a fascinating battle between Nosková's attacking power and Mertens' tactical discipline and defensive resilience.
