Judo As It Happened, Commonwealth Games 2026: Asmita Dey, Harsh Singh Enter Finals To Confirm India A Medal

We are underway with judo at the Commonwealth Games 2026, and the first Indian in action is Harsh Singh, who faces Chikondi Kathewera of Malawi in the men’s -60kg elimination round of 16.

For those following judo for the first time, ippon is the highest score and ends the bout instantly, usually awarded for a clean throw with force, speed and control, or for holding an opponent down for 20 seconds.

Waza-ari is worth half a point, and two waza-aris add up to an ippon and also finish the contest.

Harsh is currently ranked 99th in the world.

Harsh Singh made a dominant start to India’s judo campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026, defeating Chikondi Kathewera of Malawi by ippon in the men’s -60kg elimination round of 16.

The Indian judoka looked in control from the outset and quickly put his opponent under pressure. Although an earlier arm-lock attempt was ruled an illegal transition after a replay review and resulted in a yellow card for Harsh, he responded immediately after the restart by executing the same submission cleanly.

Kathewera tapped out, handing Harsh a straightforward victory and a place in the quarterfinals.

India’s Shraddha Kadubal Chopade has progressed to the women’s -52kg quarterfinals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after her elimination-round opponent Jane Massaquoi of Sierra Leone failed to appear for the bout.

The 21-year-old Maharashtra judoka, who won the 2025 National Championships, walked onto the mat in white, completed the customary bow, and was awarded the contest as a no-contest, sealing her place in the last eight without stepping into action.

India's flawless beginning in judo persists as Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh secure victories in their individual matches, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Competing against the reigning Commonwealth Games champion was always going to be a significant challenge, and unfortunately, Shraddha fell to Australia’s Tinka Easton in the quarterfinals. It was a fiercely contested match, but the Indian athlete was ultimately overpowered by her Australian opponent. Easton secured victory with a yuko.

India faces consecutive defeats in judo as Rohit Majgul is eliminated by Cyprus' Petros Christodoulides in the quarterfinals.

This marks the conclusion of Shraddha Chopade's journey as she is defeated by Yuko to Lola Hodson from Wales in the women's -52kg repechage. Hodson starts off quickly, launching an immediate attack on Chopade, who attempts to maintain her defensive stance. Chopade receives two Shido (similar to a yellow card), and shortly after, Hodson secures an arm lock on her, having also received a Shido, and scores a point. Throughout the match, the Welsh competitor appeared to maintain control, as evidenced by her ability to lock Chopade's limbs multiple times. Ultimately, she secures victory by Yuko, which is a lower point score for throws and holds, unlike an ippon or waza-ari that signifies a knockout.

In a closely contested match, Rohit Basir Majgul faced off against Michael Fryer in the Men -66 kg Repechage, ultimately losing by Yuko with a score of 1 - 2.

Asmita Dey triumphs over Scotland's Summer Shaw to secure a place in the final of the Women's 48 kg Judo event. Medal confirmed for India.

Harsh Singh delivered an impressive performance! He has advanced to the Men -60 kg final after securing a Waza-Ari (10-0) victory, marking India's second medal in judo at this Commonwealth Games.

India is poised to secure two medals within a span of ten minutes in judo, with Yamini leading against South Africa's Donne Breytenbach, and she has succeeded! She wins by ippon! Yamini now joins Harsh Singh and Asmita Dey as the other judokas who have guaranteed themselves a medal!

Asmita Dey is set to compete against Canada’s Heidi Quach, while Harsh Singh will take on Australia’s Joshua Katz, and Yamini Mourya will go up against England’s Acelya Toprak. All three matches are slated to commence at 8:30 PM IST.
