The World No. 31 squash champion talks about her latest triumph, and CWG preparations.

You seemed confident when you outplayed Gaby Schmol of Switzerland in the German Ladies Open to earn your fourth WISPA title.

It felt good to win in Germany, especially 3-0 in the final. I had beat Gaby a month earlier in tough 4-setter. It helped me to gain confidence.

Was there any special preparation?

I had just finished the Asian seniors in Chennai, so I was confident of playing well. In Chennai I work with Major Maniam and Cyrus. Their guidance helped me do well.

Why did you choose to train in London? Who is your present coach?

I train in England with Malcolm Wilstrop. He has coached some of the world’s best players.

Brief us about your preparation for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games?

I am training in England now, and then will play some tournaments, as well as train.

How do you feel about squash not being included in the Olympics games list so far?

It is a massive blow; squash is as deserving as any Olympic sport out there.

Do you think squash needs a revamp to become more spectator-friendly?

Definitely, we need more sponsors to boost the profile of squash, as well as market it well.

What is your fitness routine like?

I do a lot of strength training and conditioning. I also do running, bike, and plyometrics.

What do you think about India’s chances in the Commonwealth games?

We have a good chance in doubles, if not in singles as well.

Would your rapport with Dipika Pallikal translate into good court chemistry?

We are able to play well because we know each other’s game so well.

Do you think the government has to announce incentives to promote squash?

Certainly; it should offer more financial help, as well as guarantee job security if an athlete has represented the country.
