In the earlier match of the evening, Scotland have secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Italy to finish third and qualify for the FIH Women's World Cup. Amy Costello scored the only goal of the game.

The teams stride out to the pitch. Salima Tete wins the coin toss and decides to start with the ball in the first quarter. The national anthems of two nations are now being renditioned, and the match is about to begin very soon.

It's a bustling start to the match as India surge ahead and make a circle entry early doors, appealing for a penalty corner as they believe the ball caught an English foot. They take the referral and replays are being looked at by the third umpire.

It was a foot, indeed and India get the penalty corner. The in-form Navneet Kaur lines up for the drag flick and her shot is blocked by a supine English goalie. The Women In Blue miss out on an early opportunity.

Some frenetic back-and-forth shows the teams trying to force openings but not entirely succeeding, leading to attritional play. This is setting up as a real battle of equals.

England break the deadlock in the 13th minute! The visitors make the most of their first penalty corner, as Grace Balsdon drills a powerful drag flick past India goalie Bichu Devi and last defender Navneet. Despite a good start, India trail at the end of the first quarter.

India miss a big chance, early in Q2! Lalremsiami sets up the move, infiltrating the circle with a pinpoint ball to Ishika, who tries to flick it across the face of the goal but the attempt goes wide of the far post.

India earn their second penalty corner in the 23rd minute, owing to a stick check in the English circle. Vaishnavi Phalke makes the injection and Annu goes for the kill this time, but her shot is blocked and England ward off the equaliser threat once again.

More fervent efforts from India in the backend of the second quarter, but to no avail. The first half comes to an end with England holding to a 1-0 lead. The hosts have not been able to create as many chances as they would have liked, and would want to change that in the third and fourth quarters.

The mid-game breather is over and the players return to the pitch for the third quarter. India make an early foray into the English circle and appeal for a foot, but do not get the decision in their favour. The hosts have started the second half with positive intent.

India garner a penalty corner in the 36th minute! It is their captain Salima Tete who sets it up, and also takes the injection. Annu with the drag flick once again, but her shot is easily kept out by the England custodian.

India's woes compound as England double their lead in the 43rd minute. The goal is credited to Elizabeth Neal. The hosts plead insistently to the umpire that Neal's pass came from outside the circle. But the TV umpire says no advice is possible, and hence the on-field decision of goal stays. India have their task cut out in the fourth quarter.

Five-odd minutes remain in the fourth and final quarter and India are now beginning to run out of steam in their quest of a fightback. England are far too well organized at the moment to concede two late goals. The hosts need a miracle to stay in this contest.

India get a penalty corner in the penultimate minute, but it's not their drag-flickers' day. Navneet is unable to connect too well and England keep the ball out comfortably.

There comes the final hooter. India are unable to score even once on the night, which is largely also due to England's dogged defence and enterprising attacking. The visitors win 2-0 to cap their World Cup qualification with the title. India will be playing the Cup too, but are unable to get the job done at home in the final.
