India Women’s Hockey Team In Tears After Heartbreaking World Cup Exit Against Australia

India's women's hockey players were left in tears after their dream of reaching the FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026 semi-finals came to a heartbreaking end against Australia. A tense 0-0 draw in Amstelveen was not enough for India, with Australia progressing to the last four on the tiebreaker of goals scored in the pool stage.

The final hooter brought an emotional end to India’s campaign. Captain Savita Punia was seen holding back tears, while Bichu Devi and several other Indian players were visibly emotional as their semi-final dream slipped away. India had fought their way into contention throughout the tournament, but the narrowest of margins separated them from a historic place in the last four.

India Needed A Win, Australia Needed A Draw

The equation was simple before the match. India needed a victory to reach the semi-finals, while Australia required only a draw. Both sides eventually finished level on points and with an identical goal difference of -2, but the Hockeyroos went through because they had scored three goals in the relevant stage compared to India’s two.

Australia started on the front foot and had two goals ruled out for dangerous play following reviews. India, however, remained disciplined in defence, with Savita and Bichu making important interventions under pressure. India also had their opportunities, including a late penalty corner in the first half, but failed to find the finishing touch.

Missed Chances Come Back To Hurt India

India grew into the contest after the break and created some promising moments. Deepika missed a chance to connect cleanly, while another opening involving Lalremsiami and Navneet went begging because of hesitation inside the circle.

With time running out, India went all-out in search of the winner, even removing their goalkeeper to introduce an extra outfield player. The Indian defence continued to hold firm, but the goal they desperately needed never arrived.

The 0-0 draw ended India’s hopes of reaching their first Women’s Hockey World Cup semi-final since 1974. The defeat was especially painful given the memories of Tokyo 2020, when India stunned Australia 1-0 in the Olympic quarter-finals to reach their first-ever Olympic semi-final. This time, there was no repeat of that famous result.

Still, India can take positives from a spirited campaign that included strong performances against higher-ranked opponents. But as the tears flowed after the final whistle, the missed opportunities and what could have been will remain difficult to forget.
