By winning the 2026 title on Sunday, Germany matched Pakistan’s long-standing men’s Hockey World Cup record, according to AP. It also sharpened the focus on India and the wider slide of Asian dominance in the sport.

AP reported that the title gives Germany a fourth World Cup crown, after earlier wins in 2002, 2006 and 2023. For decades, India and Pakistan defined world hockey. Pakistan’s four World Cup titles were among the last major statistical pillars of that golden era.

That is why Germany’s latest win matters beyond one tournament. It changes hockey’s record book and underlines how the balance of power has moved away from Asia, even as India remain the region’s strongest men’s side.

Asian hockey legacy

Asia once set the standard. India still hold the sport’s biggest men’s record with eight Olympic gold medals, including six in succession from 1928 to 1956.

Pakistan built a similarly strong World Cup legacy. Their four titles came in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994. Between them, India and Pakistan won five of the first eight World Cups, a run that shaped the sport’s early history.

India’s only World Cup triumph came in 1975 in Kuala Lumpur when they beat Pakistan 2-1 in the final. That remains one of the defining moments in Indian hockey. But the old rivalry no longer carries the same global weight. India have not lost to Pakistan in a decade, while Pakistan have not won the World Cup since 1994.

Europe’s rise

The shift is clear now. Europe has seven men’s World Cup titles after Germany’s fourth, while Australia have three.

That change did not happen by accident. European hockey built stronger domestic competitions, professional structures, deeper player pathways, better coaching systems and a wider group of nations capable of producing elite teams. That gave it staying power at the top.

Asia has not kept pace. Pakistan’s decline is the starkest example. A team that once stood at the centre of world hockey has struggled badly and has not come close to its old standards for years. India’s path is different, but not free of warning signs. India remain Asia’s strongest men’s side and won Olympic bronze medals at Tokyo and Paris, yet the gap between leading Asia and leading the world remains visible.

Nagoya test ahead

The next chance comes quickly. The Asian Games begin in Aichi-Nagoya in less than three weeks, and the hockey competition starts on September 18, a day before the opening ceremony.

For decades, the Asian Games offered another stage for India and Pakistan to measure supremacy. India will be among the favourites this time and should expect to win gold. But Germany equalling Pakistan’s mark is a reminder that Asian dominance can no longer be treated as the main measure of success.

The bigger challenge lies beyond Nagoya. The Netherlands remain Olympic champions. Belgium have won a World Cup and the Olympics within the last decade. Spain, the surprise finalists at this World Cup, show Europe’s depth. Germany have now matched Pakistan, and the pressure on India is not just to rule Asia but to rebuild the wider system needed to compete for world titles again.

India’s eight Olympic gold medals still stand apart in men’s hockey. No other nation comes close. But Pakistan’s four World Cups once looked untouchable too. Germany now have four as well. That is the warning for India as it heads towards Nagoya and beyond.
