Holders Manchester United, who welcomed Mason Mount and Antony back in the starting eleven for the EFL Cup game, trailed 2-0 before the break, Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall helping the Magpies race into a lead, and conceded a third at the hour-mark. The defeat was Manchester United’s second successive 3-0 reverse at home, following last week’s thrashing at the hands of rivals Manchester City.
