Zimbabwe skipper Craig Ervine won the toss and elected to bat in the 1st Test match against New Zealand at the Queen’s Sports Club Cricket Ground in Bulawayo.

Kane Williamson was unavailable for the series, and fast bowler Kyle Jamieson took time out to be at home for the birth of his first child.

In the absence of Latham, Mitchell Santer was leading the Black Caps for the first time in test matches. Santner led New Zealand to the Tri-series title last week in Harare, beating South Africa in the final in the white ball format.

This series is not part of the World Test Championship. Zimbabwe has played seven test matches this year, losing six and winning one.

Craig Ervine - We will bat first. I think the wicket looks good, bit dry, you want to get some runs on the board and bring our spinners into play. A lot of stuff have been spoken, the mindset as a batting group needs to improve, have to have the right mindset, we went into a shell a bit against South Africa, but the mindset needs to be clear. The tri-series in between, the guys came in and had 2 days of good preparation which has been solid. Few guys have come back, Ben Curran and Brian Bennett are back from injuries, so is Sikandar Raza. Coming to the bowlers, Vincent Masekese and (Newman) Nyamhuri are back in.

Mitchell Santner - We would have batted first as well, might do a bit in the first hour though and we would have to exploit it. It's an honour, unfortunate for Tom (Latham), but he should be fine for the second Test. A great opportunity to play a Test against a good team, that's how we're going to treat it. We've a big summer coming ahead both home and away - two spinners with Bracewell coming in and three pacers - Matt Henry, Nathan Smith and Will O'Rourke - same make-up like Zimbabwe.
