England all-rounder Freya Kemp made it count with bat and ball as she led the hosts to series-levelling victory in the 2nd T20I match, to be played Bristol on Saturday, May 30.
After rescuing England with a blistering unbeaten 39 off 13 balls at the death, Kemp returned figures of 2/15 with wickets of Smriti Mandhana and star Jemimah Rodrigues in two overs as India lost their way to finish at 142/9 in pursuit of 169.
Earlier, the visitors had done well to restrict the hosts to 168/5 for most of the innings, with young left-arm spinner Shree Charani once again impressing with figures of 3/25.
But Kemp's late assault, helped England plunder 39 runs from the last two overs and swing the momentum in their favour.
India's run-chase began well but Shafali Verma (22) gave away her wicket as Lauren Bell struck for the hosts. However, Mandhana (32) and Yastika Bhatia (33 retired out) put on the gears as they went after the English bowlers.
India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur briefly threatened a fightback, pulling Lauren Bell for a six over deep backward square leg during her 28 off 22 balls.
But England struck at the right moments. India's lower-order failed to deliver as England's bowlers tightened the screws. Rodrigues' wicket was the final nail in the coffin as ENG-W tightened their grip on the match.
India's lack of lower-order fight saw England win the match by 26 runs as they restricted the visitors to 142-9 (20).
Earlier, England skipper Charlie Dean had won the toss and decided to bat against India in the second women's T20 of the three-match series, on Saturday.
Harmanpreet Kaur made her comeback in the starting line-up, leading the Women In Blue after being rested for the first match, while spin all-rounder Shreyanka Patil replaced Bharti Fulmali.
The three-match series is tied at 1-1 after India won the first T20I by 38 runs in Chelmsford. The third and final game will be played on Tuesday, June 2 at Taunton.
