Marco Jansen’s 4-wicket haul sealed a dominant Proteas win
South Africa recovered brilliantly after an early collapse to post a competitive 187/7 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After being reduced to 20/3 in the powerplay, the Proteas rebuilt through a strong 97-run partnership between David Miller (63) and Dewald Brevis (45) that swung the momentum firmly in their favour.
Tristan Stubbs’ quickfire 44* further accelerated the scoring late, allowing South Africa to set a challenging target of 188 for India. The total was well-balanced, coming against some incisive bowling from India’s pace attack led by Jasprit Bumrah early on.
India’s run-chase never really took shape as the top order faltered against quality bowling. Marco Jansen (4/22) and Keshav Maharaj (3 wickets) were relentless, never allowing Indian batters to settle, while South African spinners kept the pressure tight in the middle overs.
India were eventually dismissed for 111 in 18.5 overs, with Shivam Dube (42) the lone resistance in an otherwise struggling batting lineup. Suryakumar Yadav’s side, which had looked dominant earlier in the tournament, suffered a heavy 76-run loss, their first defeat at this stage.
The result shifts the Super 8 landscape significantly. South Africa’s emphatic win gives them a strong start in Group 1 and boosts their semifinal hopes, while India’s prospects have become more complicated, needing wins in their next fixtures to stay in contention.
