India Vs England July 24 Dispatch: Pant's Heroic Effort; Stokes Among All-round Greats

The second day of India vs England fourth Test brought more top-tier action at the Old Trafford as the hosts took control of the game thanks to a brilliant partnership from the opening duo of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. But before that, Rishabh Pant stole the show with his heroic re-entry into the match after a foot injury on the opening day of the Test.

Pant's return

Rishabh Pant could be out of the remainder of the tour owing to his foot injury but that did not stop him from hobbling to the middle to bat. The left-hander scored 54 before departing and earned praise for his character and courage.

On social media, Pant was likened to Anil Kumble who once bowled with a broken jaw.

Kamboj's debut wicket

Anshul Kamboj was expensive in his maiden Test spell but once he returned for his second spell, he got what he had dreamt of - his first Test wicket. He dismissed a well-set Ben Duckett who was beaten by extra bounce and gave a catch to substitute wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel. The fast bowler from Haryana finished the second day with 10 overs and 48 runs with that sole wicket.

Stokes in elite list

Ben Stokes picked up a five-wicket haul to help England bowl India out for 358. With his fifer, Stokes is now only the fourth player in Test cricket history with 10 centuries and 5 five-wicket hauls. Ian Botham, Garfield Sobers and Jack Kallis were the only three players in this list before Stokes broke in.

Farokh Engineer honoured

Former India wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer was honoured ahead of the day's play as a stand named after him was inaugurated.

Jagadeesan to replace Pant

Narayan Jagadeesan, the accomplished right-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Tamil Nadu, is reportedly set to join the Indian squad as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant who is likely to be out of the remainder of the series. An official announcement on the replacement is expected any time.
