India Vs England Test Series Dispatch: Pressure Mounts On Gambhir, Shastri Backs Gill

The second Test between India and England is still some days away but developments around the series keep taking place. Indian team, led by new Test captain, Shubman Gill is aiming to bounce back after a five-wicket loss in the opening match of the series. While Gill is still new to captaincy, head coach Gautam Gambhir is under radar for his underperformance as the coach of the red ball side. India are also looking to make amends ahead of the second Test with lower order batting and bowling unit failing in the first Test.

Shastri backs Gill

Former India head coach has showed confidence in Shubman Gill to lead India to greater heights but he wants the management to give the youngster a long rope.

“Let him be there for three years," Shastri said. "Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you.”

Results needed for Gambhir

India have one just one of their last nine Test matches and that has put the job of head coach Gautam Gambhir under danger. Former India opener Akash Chopra has said that pressure is now mounting on Gambhir.

“There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket and red-ball cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been losing and losing," Chopra said.

Clarke wants Kuldeep in XI

World Cup-winning captain Michael Clarke wants India to bring in Kuldeep Yadav into the playing XI as he is a genuine wicket-taker.

“Bowling-wise, I do not want to single out anyone for blame, but India have to play Kuldeep Yadav. He is a genuine wicket-taker and could have made a big difference in the last Test,” Clarke said.

Prasidh takes accountability for leaking runs

Analysing his performance in first Test, Prasidh Krishna said he could not get his length right.

"If I look at the first innings, I was a little too short than where I wanted to be, 6-8 is ideal. Second innings it got slightly better, because again, the wicket was slightly slower. I had to pitch a few slightly behind 8, and go slightly fuller, when I am trying to get a wicket," Prasidh said at a press conference. "I definitely did not bowl the lengths that I wanted to. It took me some time to get used to the slope on that side. No reasons, but I should be able to do it as a professional. I take complete responsibility about it, and maybe, do it better next time."
