Joe Root etched his name into the history books on Thursday (July 10) at Lord’s by becoming the first batter ever to score 3,000 runs in Test cricket against India. In doing so, the former England captain added another milestone to an already glittering career and reinforced his reputation as one of the finest batters of his generation.

Root achieved the landmark during the third Test of the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, glancing a boundary off Nitish Kumar Reddy in the 44th over to bring up the 45 runs he needed to cross the 3,000-run mark against India. The ongoing match at the Home of Cricket is Root’s 33rd Test against India, a rivalry that began with his debut in Nagpur back in 2012.

Over the last 12 years, Root has become a thorn in India’s side across conditions, compiling 10 centuries and 12 fifties against them in the longest format. More than 300 players have featured in Tests against India since their debut in 1932, but none had breached the 3,000-run barrier until Root.

In the list of most runs scored against India in Tests, Root now stands clear at the top. He surpassed Ricky Ponting, who managed 2,555 runs in 29 Tests against India. Others in the 2,000-run club include Alastair Cook, Steve Smith, Clive Lloyd, Javed Miandad, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and Michael Clarke.

Root also brought up his 103rd 50-plus score in Test cricket during the innings—matching the legendary tallies of Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting. Only Sachin Tendulkar, with 119 such scores, stands ahead of him on that list.
