Team India's Record In Opening T20Is In Every Country: All You Need To Know Before Historic Fixture Against Japan

India will play Japan in a one-off T20I on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture. The match marks 75 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries and a first for Indian cricket.

It will be India’s first-ever T20I on Japanese soil and also their first international match of any kind in Japan. Shreyas Iyer leads the side, which the BCCI named for the Japan tour and the 2026 Asian Games. Before the multi-nation event begins, India face the home team at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Sano.

The game also adds a new stop to India’s T20I map. Japan will become the 13th country where India have played a T20I, giving the fixture weight beyond the result.

In Australia, India’s first T20I came against Australia and ended in a 9-wicket loss. In Bangladesh, their first T20I was against Pakistan and India won by 7 wickets. In China, India opened against Nepal and won by 23 runs.

In England, India’s first T20I was against Bangladesh and they won by 25 runs. In Ireland, their first match came against Ireland and India won by 76 runs. In New Zealand, India’s first T20I there was against New Zealand and ended in a 7-wicket defeat.

South Africa brought a better start. India beat South Africa by 6 wickets in their first T20I there. In Sri Lanka, they beat Sri Lanka by 3 wickets in their first such game in the country. In the UAE, India’s first T20I was against Pakistan and ended in a 10-wicket loss.

The United States produced one of the narrowest results. India’s first T20I there was against West Indies and they lost by 1 run. In the West Indies, India’s first T20I came against Afghanistan and India won by 7 wickets. In Zimbabwe, India opened with a 6-wicket win against Zimbabwe.

That spread of results frames the Japan game. It also shows that India have usually adjusted quickly when playing their first T20I in a new country.

Record And Milestones

The broad trend favours India. They won their first T20Is in Bangladesh, China, England, Ireland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, while defeats came in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the UAE.

One loss stands out for the wrong reason. India’s 10-wicket defeat to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE remains their heaviest setback in a first T20I in a country. At the other end, the 76-run win over Ireland stands as their most commanding victory in such matches.

Chasing has produced some of their cleanest finishes. India’s 7-wicket wins over Pakistan in Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the West Indies are their most comprehensive successful chases in a first T20I in a country. The 6-wicket win at the Wanderers was also India’s first-ever win in South Africa and their maiden T20I victory.

There is a batting landmark too. India’s highest team total in their first T20I in a country is 244/4, made against West Indies at Lauderhill, Florida, in 2016. Even that was not enough, as India lost by 1 run despite KL Rahul’s century.

The overall numbers are strong. Across 12 first T20Is in different countries, India have won 8 and lost 4 for a win rate of 66.67.

Results against host teams are also solid. India have won 4 of 6 first T20Is against the home side, beating Sri Lanka, Ireland, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The only losses in that category came against New Zealand and Australia.

The toss pattern is just as telling. India have batted first 6 times in their first T20Is across countries and won 3 of those matches, a 50 per cent success rate.

Bowling first has worked better. India have won 5 of 6 such matches for a win rate of 83.34. That trend may shape their thinking again, and the Shreyas Iyer-led side could choose to bowl first against Japan despite starting as favourites.
