Afghanistan held their nerve in a thrilling ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group D clash, edging past the United Arab Emirates by five wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
After being put in to field, Afghanistan bowled out UAE for 160/9, with Azmatullah Omarzai running through the middle order with a superb 4/15, while Sohaib Khan top-scored for the visitors with a composed 68.
In reply, Afghanistan chased down the target in 19.2 overs, finishing 162/5 as Ibrahim Zadran led the way with a valuable 53 and Omarzai chipped in again with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 40.
The win not only marked their first victory of the tournament but also kept their faint hopes of reaching the Super 8s alive, as they battled back from earlier setbacks in the campaign.
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bowl first.
