Wasabi is as good as my two favourite Japanese restaurants. But you can eat cheaper in most top restaurants in New York. Welcome to the brave new India!

Meal for two without alcohol:

H
ow does one review the most expensive restaurant in the country? Answer: With a big fat wallet. Since Outlook agreed to reimburse me for only a fraction of what it costs to eat here, I threw caution to the winds and decided to splurge at Wasabi, the new Japanese restaurant opened by celebrity superchef, Masaharu Morimoto, who has temporarily abandoned his establishments in New York and Tokyo for our benefit. There will be no Diwali bonuses for my household staff this year.

Among appetisers, both the toro tartare (raw tuna from the belly of the fish) topped with caviar, and the white fish carpaccio were amazing. The rock shrimp tempura, lightly battered and tossed in spicy mayonnaise, was very good. As main course, the black cod miso, marinated overnight in sake, was divine, as was the Chilean sea bass. The grand finale was wasabi sorbet, simply the best dessert I’ve had in years. The combination of bitingly sharp Japanese horseradish and cold, sugary sorbet works surprisingly well.

Service, unfortunately, was tediously slow. The bottomline: Wasabi is as good as my two favourite Japanese restaurants, Nobu in downtown New York and Nobu in Mayfair, London. The young couple at the next table, on a tight budget, ordered beer, one appetiser and two main courses. The tab: Rs 6,000 plus. They had to miss out on the best the place had to offer. You can eat cheaper in most top restaurants in New York. Welcome to the brave new India!
