The ban on child labour is welcome, but is the government equipped to implement it?
- Government has no head count on the number of working children. NGO estimates put the figure at 2 crore.
- Children working as domestic help, usually invisible, not accounted for
- Not clear which government arm is responsible for the rescued child. Is it the labour ministry, the WCD or the social welfare ministry?
- Cost of feeding, clothing, educating, sheltering a child is Rs 2,000 p.m. Government yet to earmark a budget.
- CWCs ill-equipped to handle task.
