ne Moo, please.” The waitstaff obviously has heard that a million times, but the order rolls a bit embarrassedly off the tongue. The burger though is a comforting, very large mouthful: soft, fresh bun; succulent beef patty; tomato par-cooked by the heat of the meat and enough greens to quieten the conscience.

The Karnataka government has just dropped a bill against cow slaughter, and burger junkies are heaving a sigh of relief. At Thulp (the name comes from local slang meaning a good beating, but could mean wolfing down food), burgers make the world go round. Besides, the Moo burgers with various add-ons (Rs 150-250), there’s also the ‘Imposter’, with chicken (Rs 150-190), and vegetarian alternatives. We can’t tell you how they taste, however: Thulp is that rare place where we place exactly the same order every time: Sour Puss (home-style lemonade, Rs 35), burgers, and Paw Paw Pow, a Thai green papaya and mango salad with the rather odd slivers of tomato and carrot (Rs 100). Excellent each time, and we see no reason to change—especially as closest competitor Hard Rock Cafe charges three times as much for the burger. Be warned though: After this ‘fast’ food, all you want to do is sleep.
