Disaster On The Horizon

Temperature
  • Projected to increase by as much as 3 to 4 degrees celsius towards the end of the 21st century.
  • The warming will be across the country. More pronounced over parts of northern India.

    Water resources
  • The hydrological cycle (includes processes such as evaporation and precipitation) is predicted to become more intense and unstable.
  • Higher annual average rainfall in southwest India. Low rainfall in the western parts of the Ganga basin.
  • Some areas will get excess rain while others will have extreme drought.

    Forests
  • Forest cover is likely to decrease, which may lead to loss of biodiversity.

    Foodgrains
  • Reduction in farm yields as a result of an increase in temperature.
  • Change more pronounced for rain-fed crops like rice.

    Health
  • Climate change could increase the incidence of malaria in areas that are already prone to the disease and also introduce it into new areas.
