In front of Naina Devi’s house in Laxmanpur-Bathe of Arwal district lies a huge stone where 58 names are engraved. The description on the stone says that they were martyred on 1 December 1997 by the Ranvir Sena. The stone has seven names from Naina Devi’s family. She doesn’t know why they were killed. “The people who were killed were poor and they used to work in upper-caste bhumihars’ land as labourers. What enmity did they have with landlords?” Naina Devi asks.
