The legislative assembly turned treasury for three days here, Rs 60,000 in coins sat on the reporters’ table in the well of the House—having been dumped there by a trio of Congress MLAs. They were protesting the imposition of a Rs 20,000 fine by Speaker Maheswar Mohanty. The MLAs, objecting to the Speaker’s refusal to allow a discussion in the monsoon session last year, climbed on to Mohanty’s podium and tore out the microphone. A livid Mohanty said it would cost Rs 60,000 to repair it and ordered Rs 20,000 deducted from the salaries of Nimai Sarkar, Debasish Patnaik and Rabindra Mallick. The three didn’t draw their salaries for the past five months and when the assembly was convened on Monday, they walked in lugging 15 bags of coins to pay the fine.
