The Wheels Jam Up

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is busy cracking down on the rich and famous who bought cars from dealers who had fudged custom duties. The latest to fall into the net: actress Sushmita Sen. Her Toyota Land Cruiser has been seized and she’s been asked to pay additional customs duty of Rs 20 lakh. The papers of the vehicle, including the year of manufacture, had been fudged. The vehicle, imported by car dealer Haren Choksi, had been declared a 1998 model while it was actually manufactured in 2003. The Cruiser also violated the transfer of residence scheme which makes it clear the vehicle can’t be sold for two years. The DRI say the vehicle is worth Rs 56 lakh.
