The Triumphant Grandson

ONE July morning, Manzoor Ahmed, currently additional DGP (security), Uttar Pradesh, called on Maulana Mannan Raza Khan at his residence just behind the Ala Hazrat Dargah in Bareilly. Ahmed pleaded with Khan not to disrupt the forthcoming visit by the Prime Minister to the shrine as he wanted to come as a " muzrim " and "apologise". It had little impact on Khan. Sharma intervened and won over seven members of the Khan family over the visit. Mannan Khan, grandson of the Ala Hazrat, did not yield. And Rao retreated.

In October, following the offer of the chadar by Home Minister S.B. Chavan, Khan organised local residents to "purify" it. He alleged that Sharma had been "distributing petrol pumps and free railway passes to buy over Muslim support".
