There is no hard and fast rule about the number of people in a shakha which has six or more members has a Gatanayak (group leader) or Ganashikshak (martial arts instructor) and then a Mukhya Shikshak (head instructor) who sets the programme for shakha. At the apex is the Karyavah (secretary). While no record is kept of the number of participants in each shakha — the ideal size is considered between 50 to 100 — there are close to 40,000 shakhas in India.
